If only Claire would have been so lucky.

Sunday evening, Vivienne cornered Claire in her hallway again, ripping into her about spending time with her Triad and telling her that if she caught Claire spending time with the Triad again, she would expose her as a whore to the whole Academy and make her an outcast and possibly get her expelled.

Claire firmed her resolve from last night. She would stay away from the Triad. Even though she had a wonderful time with them on Saturday, it wasn’t worth losing her place here in the Academy. Not when she was learning so much and starting to feel like she belonged.

She stayed close to Holly and her friends and if they noticed her clingingness the next few days, they didn’t mention it. Holly seemed to stick closer than normal and Claire was grateful for it. Desmond tried to speak with her Monday after Spells and Potions but Claire made an excuse that she had to talk to Professor Helene before class and slipped away. He didn’t try again on Tuesday or Wednesday but steadily watched her throughout class like she was a puzzle he was trying to figure out.

Everett didn’t approach her directly but she caught hints of his scent on the wind as she hurried around campus. Enough that her heart clenched every time. She shouldered herself on though. Classes were starting to pick up and she was often at the library until late studying for the various assignments their professors had loaded on them.

In Combat Class, they had started running on Monday. After running through Warm-up Forms A, B, and C, Malcolm had them run 10 laps around the arena wall before dismissing them. Some students had clearly been running for years and finished quickly. Others, like Claire, were a little bit more out of shape and did a mixture of running and walking. Claire insisted that Holly didn’t have to wait for her but Holly was equally as stubborn that she would wait. They compromised by Holly waiting outside the arena for Claire to finish.

Claire felt Malcolm’s eyes on her as they made laps around the arena throughout the week but he didn’t approach her until Thursday. As one of the last students in the arena, there was nowhere for her to go when she felt his energy approaching her on her last lap. She was up to running three laps around the arena, alternating between running one lap and walking two laps. She was finishing up her last lap when she felt him.

“Claire, can you stay after class?” His voice was calm but firm and Claire found herself nodding before she realized what she was doing.

She finished her lap and waited by her bag while the other students finished. “Is there a problem, Instructor Malcolm?”

She deliberately used his title in front of his name to remind herself of the stakes. She would distance herself from the men to keep her place here.

“Yes.” Malcolm‘s voice was tight and the word was almost a growl.
